Senior Home Health Care Checklist

If your family member is receiving skilled services using their Medicare benefit, ask how many weeks they expect to be caring for your loved one and how often they will come. If your family member will be a private duty client, first clarify if any of the services he/she needs could be covered under their Medicare part A or part B benefit. Sometimes these services meet the skilled requirement especially when your loved one is homebound. For private duty services, clarify how the fees are structured. Are you charged for the caregiver’s travel time? If so, how much? Is transportation available if you need someone to take your family member to an appointment? How are the fees charged? For private duty, are there minimum hours required? Are there maximum hours before you are charged overtime? What is the procedure if a caregiver fails to show up?
